Macromolecules worksheet and answer key

A free, printable worksheet for the four biological macromolecules — carbohydrates, lipids, proteins and nucleic acids — designed to be completed alongside the Macromolecule Builder.

Students don't read about dehydration synthesis here. They build a molecule, watch a water molecule leave, and write down what happened. Every question asks what they did and what resulted from it: what single change turned starch into cellulose, what happened to a fatty acid chain when they added a double bond, what their own DNA sequence produced when it was transcribed. There is nothing on these pages a student can answer by copying a textbook.

The worksheet runs six student pages, one part per macromolecule family, finishing with a section that asks students to match a family to a job a cell needs done — storing energy, building a barrier, speeding up a reaction, passing on an instruction. A complete answer key is included for you, with the reasoning behind each answer rather than just the answer itself.

It's written for high school biology and introductory college biology, and fits a single 45 to 60 minute period. You can also assign it as homework, since the builder runs in any browser on any device, including a Chromebook or a phone. Nothing to install, no student accounts, no class codes.
