Our vision is to lead a transformative movement in public education across the United States. We aspire to be catalysts for change, fostering an environment where students and teachers are prioritized above all else. Why We're Called Delta
In science and mathematics, delta means change — the difference between where something started and where it ended up. That symbol is the whole idea behind this work. We are not interested in a student's starting point as a verdict. We are interested in the distance they can travel, and in building the conditions that make that distance possible.
What We're Up Against
Ask almost any public school teacher what their classroom budget covers and you will get a tired laugh. More than nine in ten teachers spend their own money on materials their students need, and the average teacher now spends over $600 out of pocket in a single school year. Science teachers specifically, can face it because of the materials needed for labs.
Meanwhile, the students who most need one-on-one help are the least likely to get it. Skilled tutoring is expensive, and we are not going to pretend otherwise or claim we have solved it (a practice that underprices itself out of existence helps no one). What we can do is refuse to let a single hourly rate be the only door in. We work with public homeschool charter programs as an approved vendor, which means some families can access our services at no cost to them. We are also working to expand our public school network to provide more services as vendors. We are building toward small-group sessions for the same reason. And everything we publish on our blog stays free, permanently, for anyone who needs it, no matter when.
Currently, there is a system where a student's access to a real science education depends far too much on the ZIP code they were born into and the discretionary income of the adult standing at the front of the room.
We think that is unacceptable, and we have built our entire operation around chipping away at it.
How We Work
Today: one student at a time. We offer one-on-one online tutoring in biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics from pre-algebra through calculus, including Digital SAT preparation. We work with students in California, Virginia, and New York, and we have supported more than fifty students to date.
We started one-on-one for a reason. With a single student in the session, nothing gets skipped for the sake of the schedule. The pace is set by understanding rather than by a syllabus, a stuck point can be taken apart as slowly as it needs to be, and a student can say "I still don't get it" as many times as they need to without an audience. Much of what we do in a session is diagnostic. We work with student to find the gap that can quietly make this week's material impossible. That work is difficult to do well in a room of thirty. It is what we are for.
Next: small groups. We are working toward adding small-group sessions. Collaboratively we want to work with a few students at a time, while working through the same material together. This is not something we offer yet, but it is where we want to go, and for two reasons.
The first is access. Splitting a session among several students brings the cost per family down substantially, which puts real tutoring within reach of households for whom one-on-one rates are simply not possible. Access is not a side benefit of that model; it is the entire point of pursuing it.
The second is that some kinds of science learning genuinely happen better with company. The Next Generation Science Standards ask students to construct explanations and to argue from evidence — practices that require someone on the other side of the argument. A student who has to defend a claim to a peer, or revise it when that peer pushes back, understands it in a way that no amount of quiet nodding along with a tutor will produce. Small groups make that possible without giving up the individual attention that makes tutoring worth doing in the first place.
Resources that give teachers their time back. We design standards-aligned science and math materials for classroom teachers and homeschooling families: guided notes, CER scaffolds, graphic organizers, unit study guides, and hands-on activities, all aligned to the Next Generation Science Standards. Good curriculum should not cost a teacher their weekend.
Knowledge that stays free. Our blog exists so that students, families, and teachers can get real explanations without a paywall in front of them. If someone needs help understanding macromolecules at eleven o'clock at night, that help should simply be there.
Delta Learning Space was founded in 2021 by a marine scientist turned teacher, which is why the science we teach is not secondhand.
Every Month, We Fund a Classroom
We put our money where our vision is. Every month, Delta Learning Space makes a donation to DonorsChoose to help fund STEM projects in public school classrooms across the country. Our most recent contribution was to a classroom in Chula Vista to help fund lab safety equipment like goggles, aprons, gloves, and spill kits.
DonorsChoose has funded more than two million classroom projects since 2000. That number represents extraordinary generosity, and it also represents an enormous gap that generosity is being asked to fill. Public school teachers should not have to crowdfund the basic materials of a science education. Until that changes, we will keep funding the requests that come across our desk, and we will keep saying plainly that a functioning system would not require this in the first place.
